In 2006 the airport was ranked second worldwide after the Charles de Gaulle International Airport, Paris, in terms of aircraft movements, based on passenger, cargo and mail movements, and the fourth in Europe in the same criterion. It is situated in the village of El Pardo, which is part of the urban area of Madrid's metropolitan area. Roads Madrid's main ring road, the, also known as the Circular (Madrid) is a roundabout way to access the city centre from the north or south. The main ring road has 3 lanes in each direction, two lanes for cars and one lane for buses and taxis, although since 2005 many new metro lines have been built and it is possible to travel by bus and metro also from within the airport. This is the main traffic access road to the airport, and its extension the north, built in 2012, has also 3 lanes for each direction, but it is entirely within the airport property. Notable buildings and museums El Pardo has been the home of a number of Spanish and European celebrities, including José Antonio Pérez de Villamayor and Isabel de Farnesio, Marquise of Pescara. Its most famous building is, constructed in 1960 by, the garden city architect and the future mayor of Madrid. It is a remarkable example of the modernist movement and is well known for the sculpture La mujer en el tráiler (Woman in the trailer) by Pablo Gargallo. It was inaugurated on 23 April 1962 by President Santiago Carrillo, in a ceremony that included a record number of 10,000 visitors (other estimates are 20,000, 40,000 or even 100,000).
